A contemporary gravel garden in Hackney E5 designed for low maintenance and year-round interest with drought-tolerant planting.

Contemporary gravel garden design in Hackney E5 with drought-tolerant planting and modern outdoor furniture

Design process and result

The gravel surface creates a clean, modern look while doing important work behind the scenes. It's permeable, so rainwater soaks into the ground rather than running off into drains. That matters in urban areas where flooding is a real concern, and it means the garden contributes to local drainage rather than adding to the problem.

We chose plants that thrive without fuss: drought-tolerant and native species that support pollinators, look beautiful through the seasons, and don't need constant attention. Ornamental grasses, succulents, and structural perennials give textural interest against the gravel backdrop.

What we included

  • Permeable gravel surface for sustainable drainage
  • Drought-tolerant and native planting
  • Contemporary seating area with sleek outdoor furniture
  • Rainwater harvesting system
  • Composting area for organic waste

The couple are thrilled with their new garden. It's become their favourite spot for morning coffee and evening drinks, and the low maintenance means they actually enjoy spending time out there instead of working on it.

We're based in Hackney and work across East London. If you're interested in a gravel garden design for your E5 property or nearby, check our pricing or get in touch.

"Sarah transformed our garden. She made the whole process stress free and smooth. Communication was excellent throughout and we couldn't be happier with our new garden. Sarah took our brief and the final design is beyond our expectation. We couldn't recommend her highly enough!"

Thinking about a gravel garden?

We'd love to chat. From our base in East London and Somerset, we work with homeowners across the south east and south west to create beautiful, low-maintenance gardens.

A gravel garden works brilliantly in front or rear gardens, and it doesn't have to be minimal or sparse. Lush purples and ornamental grasses, calming water features, and textural elements like stepping stones can make a sustainable garden that's a pleasure to spend time in.
