Large Garden Planting Scheme - Woldingham, Surrey
Project overview
This large Surrey garden needed a planting scheme that would hold its own against the scale of the space. The owners wanted impact and colour from January through December, with a design that felt cohesive rather than scattered across the generous plot.
We started with a proper site assessment. The planting area is exposed to high winds and full sun, so we needed plants that would genuinely thrive rather than just survive. The clients had clear ideas about the colour palette they wanted, and we worked within that to create something bold and beautiful that suits the country garden setting.
Design process and result
The key to planting at this scale is rhythm and repetition. We designed in strong blocks with dramatic height changes and structural accents, so the scheme reads as a unified whole rather than a collection of individual plants. This approach works brilliantly for meadow-style and naturalistic planting.
Deep soil conditioning came first, giving plants the best possible start. Then we planted bold drifts of perennials and ornamental grasses, supported by shrubs and trees that add structure and year-round presence. There's a bulb programme running from late winter through spring, so the colour starts early and keeps building.
