A Walthamstow family garden redesigned to work for everyone: play space for kids, relaxation areas for adults, and beautiful planting throughout.

Project overview
A young family in Walthamstow came to us with a medium-sized garden that wasn't really working for anyone. They wanted space for the kids to play, somewhere comfortable for the adults to relax and entertain, and planting that would bring the garden to life without creating a weekend maintenance burden.
We started with a proper site survey to understand what we were working with, then designed a layout that gives everyone what they need: distinct zones that flow naturally into each other, with clever planting that softens the boundaries and creates year-round interest. This urban garden shows how family life and beautiful design can work together.
Design process and result
The garden design balances the practical with the beautiful. There's a stylish patio with comfortable outdoor furniture for alfresco dining and relaxing. Raised beds give the family space to grow herbs and vegetables, getting everyone involved with the garden. The lawn provides open space for kids' games and general family life.
We used vertical planting to draw the eye away from the boundaries: climbers and container schemes that add interest without taking up precious floor space. The result feels bigger than it is.
What we created
- Patio area for dining and entertaining
- Raised beds for growing herbs and vegetables
- Low-maintenance lawn for family activities
- Vertical planting with climbers and containers
- Wildlife-friendly perennials throughout
The family now has a garden that actually gets used. The kids have space to run around, the adults have somewhere lovely to sit in the evening, and the whole thing looks after itself pretty well.
We work across East London, including Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone, and nearby areas. If you're looking for a garden designer in E17, check our pricing or get in touch.
"Sarah from wild butterfly gardening has transformed our small city garden it’s barely recognisable. She has incorporated all our needs; big flowering planters, evergreen plants to keep the garden looking nice in winter, vegetable beds and areas for the children to play, creating a beautiful garden that I love spending time in. She was quick to produce the plans and she and her team constructed and planted the scheme without fuss. The garden keeps getting better as the garden matures and plants grow."
