Multi-Level Garden - Lewes, Sussex

Terraced garden design in Sussex with levelled planting beds, local stone and multiple outdoor zones

Project overview

This hilly Sussex garden presented a real challenge: the owners wanted a multi-use, child-friendly space with room for dining, a workshop, an area for the kids to play, and eventually a hot tub. The only access was via a very steep slope that needed to work safely while looking good.

We designed a series of levelled areas that make the most of the hillside while creating distinct zones for different activities. The planting scheme had to cope with high winds and chalky soil, so we chose tough plants that would genuinely flourish in this country garden setting.

Design process and result

The levelled planting beds were constructed from locally-sourced, sustainable materials, giving the garden structure while creating accessible planting areas. We spent time understanding the family's needs: where they wanted to sit, how the children would move through the space, and how the garden would connect to the house.

The pathway down the slope became a feature in its own right, with interesting planting to enjoy as you walk through. At each level, there's a different mood and purpose.
